Tigray contains the core of the ancient Aksumite kingdom and the historic settlements of Axum. The ruins of the city of Aksum, dating from the 1st to the 13th century, mark the heart of ancient Ethiopia and what was the "most powerful state between the Eastern Roman Empire and Persia". It includes monolithic obelisks , royal tombs, and ruins of former castles.
A series of inscription on stone tablets have proved to be of immense importance to historians of the ancient world. Some of them include trilingual text in Greek, Sabaean and Ge'ez (Classical Ethiopian language), inscribed by King Ezana in the 4th century AD.

Negash is the oldest mosque in Africa.
Ethiopian Muslems consider Negash the most important site of worship after Mecca.Negash is also known for having one of Africa's oldest mosques , that is the Negash Amedin Mesgid . The mosque in Negash in Tigray, by tradition burial site of several followers of Mohammed of the 116 (including his daughter and two of his wives-to- be) who, during his lifetime, fled to the Ethiopian kingdom to escape persecution in Mecca.Built in the 7th century.
